Professional Landscape & Garden Design for Gloucestershire, The Cotswolds, Wiltshire & South Gloucestershire

The original layout of this rear garden was a rectangular lawn with borders around all sides which included a number of very mature shrubs. However next to the house was an ugly concreted area that included a curved path leading down to a kitchen extension set at a lower level than the rest of the garden.

The clients were having a new kitchen extension built with a corten steel frame and glass on two sides, so they wanted the garden to incorporate this new building and provide lovely views of the garden from here.

I designed a lower courtyard area next to the house and new extension, which pulled the main garden area back and gave a feeling of space around the buildings. A corten steel water table was included in this area to provide visual and acoustic interest. Screening was also needed to provide privacy from neighbouring properties.

The main area of the garden was redesigned to provide oval shaped lawns set around a curved path leading to a new seating area in the sunniest part of the garden, which also benefitted from the evening sun too. Generous planting beds were set around the lawns

An informal but productive solution was found to create a division of space between the main garden area and the new seating area by using espalier trained fruit.
